Well, Me. My name is Shawn Day and I am a PhD student in the History Department at McMaster University in Hamilton.
Academically, my research interests revolve about nineteenth century Canadian economic, business and social history. Most specifically the role of drink and those who served them in late 19thC Ontario. More broadly I explore the adaptation of technology and information visualisation to the pedagogical process.
Professionally, I earned my stripes in the dotcom boom as jack-of-all trades in co-founded development ventures. Prior to that I was a self-employed journeyman involved in diverse aspects of information architecture.
I have some history in technology and a joy in life is catalyzing the reaction between technology and the study of history.
VideoJug published a wonderful instructional video today on how to give a great man-to-man hug. It’s superb. The site provides many helpful (real) etiquette videos, but and even this one in its way is meant to be of social aid. The terse subtitles just add to the mirth of this little piece. For a few good belly laughs…
Digg had a reference to the Chinese subtitles for Star Wars III otherwise know by its subtitle Backstroke of the West. Needless to say that posting sent that server down. Luckily there was a much earlier website that captured occasional screen shots and their accompanying Chinese translation of the dialogue. This was simply too funny not make reference to.

about serious luck ;-) From Michele comes this absolutely amazing story, one which I am sure is just making its way to all the major news outlets, but so visually stunning. Apparently a rabbit farmer in Germany has managed to breed a super sized German Gray rabbit. He has further convinced the North Koreans that this is the staple livestock to ‘meat’ their dietary needs. I attach pictures as this has to be seen to be believed. The BBC has picked it up in video as well the Times. The rabbits weigh in at about 7kg and are more than three times the size of the average rabbit offering surprisingly nutritious and fat-reduced meat. Amazing.
OK. It’s hit hit every front page in Christendom in the last 24 hours and with one fell swoop, Jobs was able to eclipse the entire CES show, RIM stock took a huge hit and Cisco has announced its suing Apple for trademark infringement. The iPhone interface has Apple fanboys drooling (yes, myself included) and this has to be the most ingenious reaction…a cutout model of the iPhone that can keep us happy until we can actually get our hands on a shipping model sometime in the next decade. Brilliant.
This was just too funny not to post…rather a cause to pause for second thought if you are thinking about lighting up in a public washroom.
