Question of the Week
Question for Week 11 Silver/Bruckner (22/23 November)
:
“Was confederation the product of internal Canadian impetus or of external forces such as the British colonial office? “
or
“As a Quebecer, why would you support Confederation?”

Question for Week 10 Pannakoek/Spry (15/16 November) :
“Were the existence of mixed-blood relationships in the Red River and in Rupert’s Land a source of divisiveness or cohesion?”

Question for Week 9 See/Gough (8/9 November) :
“Voluntary associations, such as the Orange Order, led to division in nineteenth British North America, but they also performed vital social good. According to See, what led to the growth of the Orange Order in St. John?”

Question for Week 8 McCallum/Tulchinsky (1/2 November) :
“What economic factors led to the disparity in development between Upper and Lower Canada by the mid-nineteenth century?”

Question for Week 7 Yee/Harris (25/26 October) :
“Why did the seigneury of Petite-nation fail to provide for its habitants? What changed in the Seigneurial system from prior times to render it ineffective by the mid-nineteenth century? ”

Question for Week 5 Errington/Upton (11/12 October) :
“What are the the strengths and weaknesses of using newspaper and public accounts to document the role of women in Upper Canadian society? ”

Question for Week 4 (4/5 October) :
“Many French Canadian historians have claimed that the conquest of Quebec in 1759–61 irrevocably altered the trajectory of French Canadian history and had a huge impact on the population of Quebec. Examining the articles for this week by Iguarta and Greer, is this position justifiable?“

Question for Week 3 (27/28 September)
:
“The articles this week examine the nature of society and economics in Newfoundland and Acadia. How do distinct economic activities shape society in these areas, and how do the two differ as a result?”

Question for Week 2 (20/21 September) :
“Canadian historians have claimed that New France was a paradise for the hard working individual. Do you think this a fair evaluation of conditions in the New World? Discuss whether this holds true with particular attention to gender and social mobility by examining the work of Noel and Eccles.”
